diy car snack tray (12)

I know a lot of us spend some serious time in the car during the summer months. And I also know that kids are best behaved when there is something in their mouth…I joke I joke…sort of. So I was on a mission to create a tray of some sort that could be wiped clean, kept in the back pocket of the car seat, and was easy and cheap to make. The kids used them this past weekend and both said it was much better than a load of napkins on the lap. Score! I purchased 2 cookie sheets from the dollar store and a vinyl table cloth from Wal-Mart. The materials cost me $5 total. I used a glue that works on metal and fabric…but I am sure a good white craft glue would work just as well. road trip

Cut your tablecloth to fit the tray. I used pinking shears for a nice finished edge. Glue on and smooth out…let it dry. What is nice about the vinyl tablecloth is that it easy wipes clean…ready for the next time!

  1. So stinkin’ smart!
We go on a 12 hour road trip (one way) every summer to visit my family in Alabama and head to the beach in Florida. I have been road trippin’ this route since I was 6 yrs old so you would think I’m an expert but I love new tips like this! A very “why didn’t I think of this before?” moment. :)
Thanks so much for the idea, I have pinned it on my Vacation board (with credit to you of course), can’t wait to do this.

    Thanks again!

  2. SUPER CUTE! Crossing my fingers you’ll share at my party! Saturdays at Seven!

    XO, Aimee

  3. Brilliant!
I wish I had thought of this years ago when I was traveling around with my 4 children. How many headaches this could have prevented.
It would be great for activities in the car as well. No more lost crayons in the seat and no more runaway matchbox cars.
You could also attach a laminated copy of your map. Kids can keep busy by marking out the route as you travel.

  4. LOVE this idea!! I recently turned one of those cookie sheets into a magnetic travel playmat thing for my youngest. Never thought of lining them with vinyl tablecloths. Brilliant!

  5. Such a great idea- my children are all grown but my husband and I travel a lot- I think these would be great for us!!! I may make some for the grandchildren and some for gifts- Thanks for the idea
