What happened? I mean really. Who thinks that something like that “performance” was anything except porn? I am a believer/supporter/100% on board with everything our freedom of speech offers and stands for….but is there ever a line drawn….ever??  The duo of Cyrus and Thicke last night on the MTV videos awards was nothing short of a disaster in my opinion. And I cannot help but think…during the rehearsals for this number some top executives at MTV were licking their chops….media…news….chatter…all of it…because this woman was going to sell herself to the media “devil”. The talk that this girl is still growing up kind of sickens me. When are we accountable? When can we say…no, she is completely aware (if not…on some heavy drug usage) of what she does…yet she does it anyway? I laugh when I think that we gave Janet Jackson such a hard time about her top coming loose on Superbowl Sunday….and that time that Lady Gaga worn raw meat…that is laughable compared to this. Why was that ok to show that on television…yet we give our public schools such grievance if they want to say “thou shalt not commit murder?” I don’t understand. Is speech free….or only if you pay a price?

What I would like to see….is a young lady come out to perform a song and actually sing it. Dressed in clothes. For an audience. Now that would be shock and awe. Music that stands on it’s own and doesn’t need porn to sell itself. That is what you brought us back in the 80’s MTV. DO you remember that….Music Television…ring a bell? Do you remember kids staying up late to watch the story of “Thriller” unfold? That is what your job is/was….tell us a story through music. Why have you sold yourself for a cheap media buck? Sadly….you have lost me. Shame on you MTV. Shame on you Miley Cyrus (and your people who are ill advising you)….I pray you get some direction.

Sorry….had to continue the discussion….what were your thoughts??

  1. It was truly bizarre and pornographic. WhenLady Gaga and Katy perry sem tame, something is wrong in the universe.. My hubby and I saw a Carly Rae Jepsen concert while on vacation in Atlantis this winter. She was so great – no hip grinding or simulated sex. There were parents with their teens and Tweens and we all commented that we weren’t embarrassed to be there. You can hate her songs but she has a good message and an even better presentation.

  2. You said it very well in your post. A huge disappointment after watching her for years as Hannah Montana with my girls. She was funny and talented. Now she seems to be going down a dark road. I hope she does follow in Britney or Lindsey’s footsteps. It’s a shame.

  3. Hi Tracie,
As sad as this “display” was, the buzz over the performance, no matter how negative, is making her management team as happy as can be. For them, any publicity is good. She is “everywhere” right now…..making people talk about her. They are thrilled to know everyone is up in arms. That is really the most disheartening part about the whole thing. People are allowing and encouraging her to behave this way to make money. And it won’t stop no matter how loud people complain. Our society wants to keep pushing the envelope, but at what point do we stop. I am not a prude by any stretch of the imagination, and hope that I encourage people to express themselves, but there comes a moment when you know the line has been crossed. Where is her mother? Who of sound mind is close to this girl who can guide/mentor her in successfully transitioning from child star to adult performer without sacrificing her dignity?
    It is just plan sad.
