I love a thrift shop. Many post you see on my blog will be inspired by something that you can find at a thrift shop and recreate into something else. This trip I picked up a cable knit sweater for $2.50.
White, and in perfect condition. I had picked it up to make it into a pillow. But another idea popped into my head when I saw this vase. I bought both…spent $6.50. Would you believe it came out lookin like this?
Here is what I did….
Lay the sweater out flat. Measure the vase on the sweater to see where you need to cut. Cut the sweater saving the extra (another project my friend..)
Next, place the vase inside the “tube” of the sweater. You may need to cut away excess. Making sure you have enough to go around the whole vase—cut away what is extra.
Heat a hot glue gun up. You will start by gluing the top edge. Using the glue gun, place some gun on the inside edge of the vase and press the sweater to hold. I used the cut edge of my sweater for the bottom of the vase and the finished edge for the top.
Go around the top of the vase….gluing and holding the sweater till you reached the point where you started.
Then, turn the vase upside down, line up your seams and glue two sides of the bottom. Be sure to lap the sweater fabric evenly all the way around so that it sits properly. I would say a wool sweater may be easier than a chunky cable knit like I used.
You can then place some glue down the vase and seam the sweater together—just keep gluing and placing
the sweater until it is all along the length of the vase.
You can now go back to finishing gluing the bottom, after your seam is lined up and glued. Just keep gluing until you have your sweater positioned correctly on the top and bottom. Flip over and enjoy! I may fill mine with branches….A nice look for winter!

I saw this idea in a magazine called Holiday Crafts by Better Homes and Gardens but they didn't have a detailed tutorial in the magazine and I really wanted to make this. They used the sleeves to make a wreath and added red felt flowers. Absolutely on my list for Christmas decor this year.
Aww, pretty cute. I must confess my problem, I don't know if I could cut up a perfectly good sweater, isn;t that crazy??? I see so many cute projects, but something about cutting it up, just I can't do it. Maybe I need to destroy it first, then obviously I would have no problem.
Silly I know, but again, this looks so cute, and I want to do it, but don't know if I can, golly.

I love that! I recently purchased some nice caple knit sweaters at a thrift store to make pillows with, but a vase is such a fun and surprising place to see knit! love it–thanks for sharing. :)
